Orla inserted her scuffed bronze-colored key into the lock, turned it, and opened the door. With its peeling light blue paint, it fortunately did nothing to betray the apartment's relative opulence.
It hadn't been like this when her and her grandmother, Kahri, first moved in. No, at that time, the place had been the dictionary definition of what the locals might call a "shithole," a term as unfamiliar to them as it was second nature to their new neighbors.

“Jasmine, Jim, you’re safe now. We’re taking you home.”

Chapter 4: In The Shadows

After another exhausting night, I stirred awake to find my mother enveloped in an exuberance I had never witnessed before. Her eyes sparkled with an infectious joy, a radiant light that seemed to illuminate the entire room.

“Good morning, Mom,” I murmured, still taken aback by the sheer brightness of her demeanor.

“Oh, my darling, good morning to you!” she replied, her voice a melody of happiness that danced in the air.

Mother had been quiet the last few days. I knew something was wrong; how could I not? My mother, who was always laughing, hadn't shown so much as the tiniest smile in days.

I hadn't ever seen her this distant for as long as I could remember.

Chapter Nine
Raine Monday

Esmerelda Devereaux walked with the ladies' of the coven down the hill, and through the housing area.

Walking was quite a different chore now, than when she'd been Lydia.

She had to take much smaller steps, and her knees ached, her hips hurt, her back felt like it was on fire, and she couldn't put her shoulders back.

"We shall give you some remedies for the elderly ailments," Agatha said as they made their way through town.

Confusion spread throughout the room as members of the family began looking around at each other.

"The Prince?" the King asked me and I could only nod.

"That's preposterous," the Queen said to no one in particular.

I watched Nicholas and Theodore briefly glance at each other before turning their attention back to me.
