By the time the night cycle began aboard the Queen’s Rage, the mess deck had transformed from a sterile cafeteria into a celebration zone. Fluorescent lights had been dimmed and replaced with soft golden hues, casting a warm glow over the crowd. Streamers and makeshift banners—scavenged from storage and splashed with squad colors—hung between bulkheads, fluttering with each vibration of the ship’s engines.

Henry and David had been friends since high school. The two engaged in various activities together, including playing sports, pursuing the same women, and indulging in considerable drinking. Both men had married well; Henry was wed to Ellen, a career-oriented woman, while David was married to Linda, who hailed from a wealthy background. Together, Henry and David operated an investment firm that thrived throughout the 2030s, until the significant crash of 2036.

Waves of warmth undulated through the air, stirring up fine particles of dust and tousling Steph's hair in a gentle dance. With cautious curiosity, she leaned forward to peer into the spiraling shaft, which seemed to descend into an endless abyss, each level shimmering faintly like distant stars before being consumed by encroaching shadows.

Gradually, it steadied into a slow, rhythmic glow, a heartbeat of illumination in the oppressive gloom. Kara gripped the pole tightly, her breath coming in quick, ragged gasps behind the visor, her heart racing in anticipation.

For a few tense heartbeats, the world around her held its breath, suspended in an eerie stillness.

The fortress gates shuddered violently as Stacy initiated her final bypass sequence. Bright sparks erupted from the seams, illuminating the darkness as the massive locks groaned and disengaged with a thunderous metallic rumble that echoed through the air. It felt as though the entire mountain was vibrating in response to the impending chaos. Just then, a powerful explosion rolled across the ridge, shaking the ground beneath her feet and filling the atmosphere with an ominous tension.

Our journey to Atlantis unfolded with a surprising sense of tranquility. After the initial drama that marked our departure, the remainder of the voyage was enveloped in a serene calm. Hours blended seamlessly together, enriched by the sound of scholarly conversations, cherished family moments, and playful jabs about my eccentric breakfast choices that danced in the salty air.

The mountain’s silence didn’t last long. First came a low, mechanical hum rolling across the slope, trembling the icy stones beneath their boots. Kara’s team re-formed at the edge of the ruined pillbox, boots crunching over spent shell casings and scorched metal fragments. The smell of burnt alloy hung in the thin air, sharp and bitter, mingling with the ozone tang from discharged plasma. Flickers of ruined circuitry pulsed in the visor light from each soldier’s HUD, painting the ground with ghostly blue reflections.

Author's Note. I took a long break from this one because I was having trouble coming up with the next relics that would drive the story further. I have finally found what I was looking for and am looking forward to moving this story on.

The passage of their souls between worlds may have doomed the Earth to apocalypse, but Alex and Michelle won't be there to see it and they have enough problems on their hands.

Author's note: I took a long break from this story because I was trying to figure out how to write fighting scenes better, especially since it is a huge part of the story at this time. I think I have come up with a battle sequence that should be intense and fun to read. So I went back to the setup to add more details to getting them armored up. I hope you enjoy the upcoming chapters.

The air was thick with an electric hum, infused with protective wards that swirled like whispers around them, empowered by the Kitsune Queen’s shimmering foxfire and the primal echoes of the Werewolf Queen’s growls, which resonated like distant thunder.
