When Angel landed at JFK, she expected the usual circus—paparazzi, a blacked-out car, maybe even a snide remark from Mark’s driver. Instead, there was just Victoria, waiting with a sign that said “Welcome Home, Angel.”

Victoria hugged her. Not the cold, European double-tap she’d grown used to, but a full-body squeeze that threatened to crack a rib.

“He’s at the penthouse,” Victoria said, and gave her a look. “Don’t be nice. He’s impossible lately.”

Chapter 9 September 19th 2025

“Here’s your money back dear,” Carla said, handing Lucy some folded bills, which she quickly pocketed. Lucy sat down on her front porch with her Mom, Carla, who lit her cigarette and took a deep pull. She could hear her Dad flipping through TV stations in the house. “Your cousin Elle invited you to her baby shower,” she said.

The first day, we didn’t actually go in ourselves. We just poked equipment through the portal on poles of various sorts, and took readings from it. We didn’t get a GPS signal or cellular phone signal except for what came through the portal from here. By closing the door I’d installed, and using a longer pole, we concluded there was no trace of those signals.

Chapter 23 – The Summit War

The flag's light pulsed once—a brilliant flash that surged through the darkness, momentarily dispelling the swirling smoke that clung to the air like a thick veil. Gradually, it steadied into a slow, rhythmic glow, a heartbeat of illumination in the oppressive gloom. Kara gripped the pole tightly, her breath coming in quick, ragged gasps behind the visor, her heart racing in anticipation.

For a few tense heartbeats, the world around her held its breath, suspended in an eerie stillness.

Whit’s phone buzzed at 9:02AM

Grace: I’ll be at class tonight, if you’re free after the class I think we should talk.

It had been a week since he heard from Grace. He thought he dodged a bullet, that she'd just forget his little admission in the Rural King parking lot. Everyday he lingered at her mailbox just a bit too long wondering if she’d come back to class or ignore the creepy old man.

Chapter 22 – Into the Fortress

The fortress gates shuddered violently as Stacy initiated her final bypass sequence. Bright sparks erupted from the seams, illuminating the darkness as the massive locks groaned and disengaged with a thunderous metallic rumble that echoed through the air. It felt as though the entire mountain was vibrating in response to the impending chaos. Just then, a powerful explosion rolled across the ridge, shaking the ground beneath her feet and filling the atmosphere with an ominous tension.

A couple months after the honeymoon, I was trying to track down a water leak that was dribbling water out into the restaurant’s dining room. They didn't have proper building plans, and they were only able to give me the same sort of map they might give guests. When I looked at the area of the leak, I noticed the map didn’t even match the building.

The next morning, it was a slow start for most of the residents of the apartments. It was Angie wanting her breakfast that roused Marian and Ken, with the added complication that they needed to shower and dress before going downstairs. They did find something in the kitchen to keep Angie satisfied.

When they got to the restaurant, they found Willow sitting alone.
