Chapter 40 – Carter

As the days slipped by, the school settled into a tranquil rhythm, the initial thrill of the new dragons gradually fading into the backdrop of everyday life. Yuqi observed with an attentive eye that the once-grand entrances of the other dragons no longer drew gasps of awe; their powers, once flaunted like banners, were now wielded with a quieter grace. Even Sebastian, still reeling from his public embarrassment in the bustling cafeteria, had chosen a path of solitude, keeping his distance with an air of reluctance.

“We should get her some clothes that fit,” Fiona takes a bite of her eggs and waves a finger at me. “That dress is hanging off of her.”
Tori, as promised, came home with food; Bob Evan’s, actually. I didn’t even know that Bob Evans made ‘to go’ food, but I guess they do because I’ve got a small container of eggs, bacon, and biscuits and gravy sitting in front of me. I’m staring at it, unsure of what to eat first or if I even want to eat. I know the deal though: they’ll want me to eat. People like to keep their prisoners alive.

When Ingrid returned home, she had started to call Sean’s place home now, and she found him kneading some bread. Despite trying hard, she failed to stop herself from laughing.

“What’s so funny?” said Sean as he used the back of his hand to move a lock of hair from his eyes.

“Of course I wanted it all – a fun career and friends and a husband and a family and no trade-offs ever. . . . When I discovered I was pregnant, though, I found out life isn’t like that. That I had to make choices, and a lot of them were hard. One of them, though . . . . One of them was easy. I chose you.”

Chapter 5

Sebastian smiled.

“I live between here and Coventry, in Balsall. You can continue up the Birmingham Road to Knowle, and then through Temple Balsall to Balsall and into Coventry. Getting to Aston Martin just means getting down to where we started on the Birmingham Road and getting on the M40 to Gayden. That’s probably less than twenty miles from here.”

“Thank you for that, Sebastian. It’s not that much further than my trips now. Shall we head for home, or is there anything else we can do?”

Chapter 8: Anna!

Say whatever he would about these changes to his body, there was no denying that through it all, Linus felt alive. For the first time since Beth’s betrayal, he actually felt emotion. Fear may have been the primary feeling, but at least his malaise was gone. This revelation gave him pause. Could what was happening be a good thing? Were the gods sending me a present? Am I being offered a new life? A chance to start over?

I’d been in Trans-Sylvania for slightly less than a year when I got a private communication from the governors. At first, the governors had been only a vague concept to me. It wasn’t until I was working for Alyssa that I’d seen anything from the governors, and then it was second-hand stuff passed on from Alyssa. When I was an Enforcer, I’d seen group emails sent to everyone in Enforcement from the governors.

This time I was being called in for a private meeting with them, and I was told it wasn’t about my job, or at least, not my current one.

I had intended to leave this story after Part 6, but Part 7 was largely written, so rather than cutting off the story part way through I have uploaded it. I know the number of readers have been dropping steadily. That is understandable, but I do hope that many of you who have persevered have enjoyed the stories.

Stephanie - Part 6 - Squaring a circle

Two events overshadowed the trio’s calendar as the new University year approached. Firstly there was the potentially difficult day of Michael’s funeral and secondly the need to get Claire and Nigel on board with their unusual family arrangement.

At the end of a long day Stephanie, Graham and Jen were lounging in their new bed, but sleep had eluded them for the time being.
