“Of course I wanted it all – a fun career and friends and a husband and a family and no trade-offs ever. . . . When I discovered I was pregnant, though, I found out life isn’t like that. That I had to make choices, and a lot of them were hard. One of them, though . . . . One of them was easy. I chose you.”

At seventy-nine, Edward Wright wants nothing more than quiet days by the sea—peace from his restless mind and from the values he never truly chose but was forced to live by. When he buys a Cape Cod beach house, he expects solitude. Instead, he discovers something left behind sixty-two years ago…something that will change the course of his final years in ways he never imagined.

Author’s note: I missed the deadline for the summer romance contest, but the idea would not let me go. I love the challenge of writing to a random theme, and this story became the result. While I draw on real places and the names of historical figures, this novel is entirely a work of fiction. I hope you enjoy it as much as I loved writing it.

Prom Surprise

Mary, Phyllis, Dave and I were having burgers in the secluded both in Big Al’s burger joint. We always went there after Dave had dragged us to the latest Anne Aragon movie. Dave had it bad. The rest of us humored him. Oh, we liked Anne Aragon but we weren’t fanatic fans like him.

We were a strange group. High school boys and girls are not supposed to be friends without romantic entanglements. We were. We had not been friends since kindergarten, only since third grade. To be honest my friendship with them had at times been vital to me and I’m not exaggerating. They had been a firm rock and a port in storm, to mix metaphors, when my life had been too crazy, which it had been all too often the last six years.

“It’s not that easy,” I said gently. “I don’t walk around with a chip on my shoulder, but . . . I don’t hide who I am. Or what I am.”

In the quiet heart of southwestern Wyoming, a small town clings to its small-town ways. But when a sudden boom brings big money and bigger secrets, what’s left of the town they thought they knew?

As usual, I want to than Malady for beta reading, and helping edit.
I'd also like to thank those who comment for beta reading too! :-)

March 15, 2014

1:47 PM

It was March. March, and if ever there was a truer place for the old adage in like a lion, out like a lamb, the house sat at the heart of it. High on a hill, surrounded by miles of open land, it stood against the storm—a solitary shape swallowed by white.

The blizzard thickened, the wind growing restless. Snow lashed the north side of the house, piling against the walls, shifting like a living thing.

Dennis pulled on his coat, tension flickering across his face. “I need to check on the animals.”

His wife frowned. “Be careful, Denny. The animals aren’t worth getting yourself killed over.”

He gave her a small, reassuring smile. “Don’t worry, Cyn. I’ll be back before you know it.”

Dennis pulled back the curtain on the kitchen door, peering out into the storm. The barn light flickered dimly through the swirling snow—at least there was still power. He was grateful he’d buried the feed underground, though frost heaves were always a risk.

He glanced back at Cyndi and Little Denny, then stepped outside.

The door slammed shut, pulled by the wind, rattling the frame. Cyndi watched him grip the top rail of the fence between the house and the barn, steadying himself as he disappeared into the storm.

Dress Like a Girl: A Gradual Feminization Story (Teaser Chapter!)

*Teaser Chapter Only!*

What happens when you enter a bet you can’t back out of? And what if that bet involves dressing like a girl?

Twenty-three-year-old Taylor Holmes knows he needs to take things more seriously. And just in time! It’s his first day of graduate school at Elkhorn University, and an amazing post-grad opportunity has just been announced. But in trying to establish himself as a serious candidate, he makes a foolish bet with his academic rival. A bet that, unfortunately, risks him dressing like a girl. What may not be a big deal to some, to Taylor — with his long brunette locks and already-feminine tendencies — dressing up just once might send him down, shall we say, an “eye-opening” path...

Excited to announce a brand new novella! Sharing the first chapter here only as a sample. The full book is now available on Amazon or FREE with Kindle Unlimited!

Happy reading :)

Dina, part 9

“Ugh,” I grunt as for the third time in as many mornings, I’m woken by the sound of not just traffic, but pedestrians passing by outside my window. With a sigh, I brush my hair out of my face, drag my tired body out of bed and slink through to the kitchen where — again, for the third time in as many mornings — my flatmate is already awake and eating her breakfast.

“Morning!” Martha says with a giggle between mouthfuls of muesli.

Met dad

Helen finally meets with her dad after years of being apart. It’s been a very long time since I last posted. Yes, I’m still alive. Yes, I’m still writing. But I’m doing it for me. She’s gonna sound different than you guys remember. Because she’s supposed to be grown up, but she’s still in there that scatterbrain you still remember. Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Padre’s story, and momma’s – and mine, and Ximo’s, and Domingo’s – were all intertwined with the man sitting across the table. Did I want to know his side of it? Could I trust anything he said?

The Heist

I was 16 and I was desperate. Oh, not because I was bullied in school. I was but that wasn’t it. I was used to THAT. No, the problem was mother and her health. That and money, or rather the lack thereof.

Lisa, part 8

I bite my lip as I stare at my friend, trying to judge her reaction to what I just said — is it surprise, or shock, or, as much as I hope it isn’t, disgust?

“…Bailey?” I ask hesitantly. “Did you hear — I, umm, I meant what I said. I’ve — I’ve always wished that I was a girl. Pl- please say something?” I bite my lip as Bailey looks at me, her mouth slightly ajar as she tries to find the words to reply. Please, I think to myself. Please be understanding, is that really too much to ask for?

Rejected

It was my first teaching job. A southern high school. Quite a cultural shock for a Boston girl.

At the end of the first week one boy looked absolutely miserable. I gently tried to find out why.

Uni as Natalia -2- A new Wardrobe.

My mouth and eyes were dry, sunlight through my parents window caused me to stir. I rubbed my eyes a little, after opening them I realised what a mistake that was. I had been wearing mascara, eyeliner and eyeshadow last night and hadn't removed it prior to sleep. The black smudged transfer on my hands led me to expect the same on my face.

Bob waited for me after Drama Club. He had two tickets to the premiere of the new Secret Sissy Spy film. Actually it was Secret Sissy Spy 3. Technically that film had had its Hollywood premiere already but this was the national cinema premiere. He had won the tickets in a call-in radio show.

“Why don’t you go there with your girlfriend?” and then I remembered that his latest girlfriend was history. Bob had quite a lot of history. Rather ironic since he got Ds in that subject.

“No, I just want to see an action movie with a friend that appreciates action movies.”

Rewriting the Script - Part 2

Dr. Elias Mercer’s office smelled like lavender and antiseptic, a combination that somehow made the framed diagrams of mammary glands on the wall feel less intimidating. The silver-haired endocrinologist leaned forward in his chair, steepling his fingers as he studied James and Jennifer with warm, crinkled eyes.

“Let me start by saying,” Dr. Mercer began, “in fifteen years of helping transgender women lactate, I’ve never had a cisgender man walk into my office with this level of commitment. It’s… refreshing.”

Uni as Natalia -1- Reaching for what you really want.

The scent was strong, acrid, maybe even a little sweet but unmistakably chemical, it was difficult to pin down any of the separate notes of the scent.

“Keep your fingers straight.” she instructed.

“Uh, sorry…” is all I managed, having suddenly been pulled out of my amateur scent analysis of the nail polish fumes.

“I know you've done this before, surely you know to keep your fingers straight, is something bothering you Jacob?” Laura enquired.

There were only three boys in the locker room at the ballet studio. We used to be best friends all through middle school. Then we started to drift apart in high school. I know why I pulled back, and I regretted it, but I had no idea why my best friends had not only drifted away from me but also from each other. We had been such a close-knit group. Standing together against the world. Three “girly” boys.

Gun & Love

I was sad that nice old Mrs Wilson next door passed away. She always had had a soft spot for me. The sadness was mitigated when I heard that a family with kids would move in instead. The Gadin family came from Sweden. That wasn’t what excited me. It was the kids.

That Bra is All Wrong for You

As soon as I said that I realized how stupid I was. For one thing you don’t say that if you are the only boy in a locker room filled with cheerleaders. And that was not even the most stupid part of it.

Lisa, part 7

“Liam! Come here!” I hear a voice yell, making me grunt as my eyelids flicker open and I take in my surroundings — my bedroom in Sonia’s flat, with bright sunlight streaming through a gap in my curtains. However, it isn’t Sonia who’s calling me. “Liam! I haven’t got all day!”

Eden Technologies Prelude

Jason stole a glance at the ornate clock perched on the nightstand, its hands ticking steadily away the moments. Vanessa would be gone for at least three hours—ample time to indulge in what he had been yearning for. The house enveloped him in a tranquil hush, the silence wrapping around him like a luxurious cocoon. His heart raced with a blend of excitement and nervousness as he stepped softly across the plush carpet, making his way toward the sanctuary of their bedroom closet.
