The mouse scratched at the walls of the small Plexiglas box it found itself in. It didn’t seem to notice when the lights in the room dimmed or when a robotic arm with a laser scanner descended from the ceiling and bathed it in a red wave of flickering light. A slight electrical hum filled the room. Moments later a shining object looking rather like a giant sparkplug lowered itself over the mouse.

A slightly hollow sounding female robotic voice echoed throughout the room. “Sequence initiation in three, two, one. Initializing.”

After an initial robust round of applause the attendees fell silent. Malcom Sanders was the latest Silicon Valley technology wizard that had quickly established himself far above his competitors in recent years. His appearances were rare but always accompanied by life and market altering innovations.

Part One – The Opportunity

I recently received a very strange email:

Shaelan ran through the stillness of the forest, silent accept for her ragged breathing. She didn’t feel the bitter cold or her snow-soaked clothing that clung to her like a second skin. She reached for the thick trunk of an aspen tree and wrapped her arms around it, grateful for its strength to keep her from collapsing to the ground. She was shaking from exertion, her lungs burning with every breath as if she was inhaling shards of glass. Her vibrant blue eyes were wide with fear as she paused to look back the way she’d come. Her hearing was exceptional as were all her senses.

Who is Aidan Webley? Is he human? Is he a special operative of the Confederation? Is he a psychic of rare ability? One thing he knows for sure is he's loyal to his government. He'll be anything his government needs him to be. Or maybe there is no Aidan, and only a lifeform designed and programmed. Maybe the question should be what instead of who.

“You are, beautiful woman.” He paused, seeing the sad, maybe rueful little smile on her lips.
“Non. Yes, you are. So it is only natural you must have been beautiful girl when you were growing up. Yes? But sadly you had been identified as a boy. Did not your parents not ask your doctors why was their son, turning into this beautiful girl in front of their very eyes? They cannot have failed to ave noticed this happening. And not turning into the andsome young man as they expected? Mmm.”

After thirty years as a professional criminal, the fabulous Imp begins a challenging new career as a teacher.

The next day, Jess tried to call me while I was getting dressed.  I saw her number on the phone.

"Fuck you for calling," and I hung up.  I was trying to decide what to wear.  I was not in the mood for a dress.  Given everything that transpired, my brain was not in dress mode.  I put on a white blouse, black wool skinny pants and a pair of black boots with a 3" heel.  I looked at myself in the mirror.

"You are ready to kick ass.  You are ready to kick ass.  You are ready to kick ass," I repeated.    I was armed for battle.

We were going to my parents for Rosh Hashanah.  I was wearing a blue v neck three quarter sleeve top with a black wool skirt that fell 2” above the knee and white Tory Burch espadrilles with a black toe. I was wearing a blue quartz necklace.  I was down another 3 pounds.  “Should I have worn the blue dress?”

“You are so adorable.”

"I’m serious. They haven't seen me like this."

Andrew Star works as a stuntman for Hollywood's greatest action star, the eccentric Tod Cruz. Suddenly, Cruz decides to get a sex change to fulfill a life-time ambition.
