Madison slid down a couple of stairs until she was sitting next to Aria. “I don’t think we’re even yet,” she said.

“Oh?” Aria asked. “You want something more?”

Madison snorted. “No. Yes. I don’t know. This,” she said, waving a frantic hand to indicate herself, the stairwell, the storm, everything.

“This isn’t enough to make up for me not screaming when I walked in on you in the girls’ bathroom. That was a ‘lol meet cute’ BS Disney moment. This is real. This is you seeing the Madison that hasn’t freaking existed since I was a freshman, and used to pray to God nobody heard me crying in the east wing stairwell, where the acoustics made my sobs sound like a tragic French opera..."

Jody’s Story, Chapter 11: Revelation

For Saturday, August 5, I brought Aries back with a specific idea in mind. After breakfast, and after asking Aries to put on one of her bikinis, I called my parents and set up another video call.

As soon as Aries came into the frame, before I even had a chance to introduce her to my parents, Mom exclaimed, “What the hell is that!”

“I can explain, Mom,” I said.

But Dad interrupted with, “Told you so.”

“Told me what?” I asked.

Demon Huntress Chapter 8

Chapter 8

By the following morning, the questions swirling through the city had finally reached the clan’s doorstep, their urgency amplified by rumor, fear, and the relentless churn of public debate. Chief among them was one that threatened to divide the community more sharply than any other: Should hunters be allowed to attend school alongside normal children?

Rebirth - part 20

Late November. They've known the date for three weeks - Jenny scheduling the induction for a Tuesday morning, the bag packed and in the car since the week before. We get to the hospital at six. Emily is checked in, changed into the gown, the IV in by six-thirty. The monitor strapped around her abdomen, the baby's heartbeat on the screen - the same fast percussion as the ultrasound in May, steady, constant.

Chapter 12

On our way home, we spoke about setting down roots of our own and talked about places where we would like to live. When our contract expired, we would lose the use of the apartment unless we re-signed, so would need to get a place of our own. Of course, by then we would have over four million in our banks. We had only splashed out on the car and a few trinkets, and our expenses were all paid for by the employers when we travelled.

My Own Villainess - Chapter 25 - The Guild

Amy in a summoning circle

Torn from his own world and stuffed into the body of a villainess, facing the end of a doomed route he himself wrote, "Amelia" must navigate a world she really should know - too bad she was never great at worldbuilding.

Stuck in a world she (maybe) created, Amelia quickly finds that reality has filled in the details she failed to describe. The characters who were so flat when she wrote them now have nuance, and motives. The kingdom she wrote into existence is experiencing internal strife she never even thought about. And let's not even get into the complexities of the magic system, or the demon that forced her into this situation to begin with...

Oh, and then there's the fact that she's about to be arrested and executed... but surely she can come up with a way to write herself out of that, right?

Chapter 11 - Magnetic attraction

Millie showed me upstairs and into an empty bedroom. It had its own adjoining bathroom and like the rest of the house was expensively furnished. “If you will wait here a moment, miss.”

More than a little embarrassed by my lapse in choice of attire I waited as requested. Minutes later she returned with a dress over her arm. “I think you will find this little frock acceptable.” It looked delightful and I took it from her eagerly, glad to be able to remedy my mistake.

Host: Feminine - part 15

My phone rings at twenty past one.

"I've got it," she says, before I can speak. Her voice is different — faster, something lit in it. "The reactivation isn't a response to the gradient. It's a response to the timing. The nodes are pattern-matching the suppression interval and compensating. If we randomize the interval — structured pseudo-random within a fixed variance band — the mesh can't predict the next suppression event."

I sit up.

"Show me," I say.

"I'm at home. I've been running it on my machine."

I'm already looking for my shoes.

The week was full on. We had Jerry take us to the appointments every day. We dressed in our special clothes, which usually lasted until after the interview and were then changed for outfits that their photographer had been supplied with. I started out every day as Zoe, but many of the pictures were me looking like someone else. Several wanted me to look like other current models, but we drew the line on that as being unethical.

Chapter 7 – Under the radar

When I spoke into the telephone, my lackadaisical “Abacus Investigations. How can I help?” provoked a rebuke.

“Will you even want to? I can tell your heart isn’t in it. Try again!”

I was too dispirited to think of a riposte. “It hasn’t been a good day” I complained.

“I disagree.” Guy sounded jubilant. “My investigation here is all wrapped up except for one or two loose ends. I ought to be back by tomorrow evening.”

They both gasped. “Jesus Christ,” Elaine said. “Did... Did you actually run through that?” she asked, pointing her hand with the cable toward the door, where hail stones slammed hard against the glass, ineffectually trying to penetrate the newfound fortress.

“I was already halfway here so I didn’t really have a choice. I thought the hail was over, then,” she paused, another thunderclap causing her to flinch, “It opened up like the wrath of God.”

“Well,” Elaine said as she strolled over, placing the cable down on the arm of the sofa next to Aria, “I’m sorry to say, you’re not going anywhere until this lets up. I hope you can stand our company that long.”

Jody’s Story, Chapter 10: Deeper Within Victoria

In the dream, within her dreamworld, I tried to see how far into Victoria’s past I see. And it was what wasn’t there that stood out. There were memories, and more memories of Victoria’s than I could ever remember exploring before. I could actually follow my Victoria back a bit further now in her mind, before I could remember ever having dreamed of being Victoria, though not all the way back to when I first invented Nancy before we had even started school. But this Victoria, the one who I grew up being in dreams, was not, no way, no how, the same as alt-Victoria that I brought into the world the other day. Even if she had some of the same personality traits, it was clear that she followed a different path.

Chapter 6 – Breaking ground

It was with some small sense of unease that I entered the Simpson mansion the next day. I knew that what I had to report would be unwelcome to my client’s ears and I was proved correct in that surmise. As soon as I told her, Gloria’s expression changed from the sunny smile that had welcomed me to a forbidding frown.

“What do you mean the licence number is untraceable?” she stormed. “This is hopeless. All your efforts have so far come to naught, except, no doubt, to leave me with a large bill.”

Hidden Desires Chapter 16

MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada:
Daisy and Jessie look at the two teenage transgender girls they rescued from a human trafficker. When the band noticed the girls, they saw that they had been doped up and dressed inappropriately for their age. Daisy got pissed and got right into the trafficker's face and pulled the switchblade she always carries for personal protection.

Demon Huntress Chapter 7

Chapter 7

Vanessa didn’t speak on the ride home. The low hum of the electric engine was the only sound, a quiet shield against the tension coiling in the car’s interior. She sat pressed against the leather seat, every muscle tight, refusing to meet her own eyes in the faint reflection on the darkened window.

Rebirth - part 19

The venue is a large room, three thousand capacity, standing floor with a balcony above. We get in and I find the accessible section along the side wall - a riser with a handful of stools, a sight line to the stage that's partially obscured by a PA column but clear enough. Emily takes the stool without argument, which tells me her back has been at it since this afternoon. I stand beside her and the opener is already playing, the PA system at full output, the low end moving through the floor and up through the body before the first song has finished.

Prologue and Chapter 01

by Sofia Hammerstein

Connor Slane has grown up to be one of the brightest kids in his dimension and one of the most ambitious computer science majors at his top university. Of course he has, given that his mother, Stacy Slane, is responsible for the most impressive discoveries in AI in their world. Connor knew that her experiences in another dimension, which she had taken a portal to go to school for college, were a major part of her success. Now, thanks to an exchange program between his university and her alma mater, Emerson University, he has the chance to forge his own path in computers and his other love, filmmaking. Having seen still images of their amazing holographic films, he hopes go to Emerson, and then return to build his own empire - and maybe even find his true self, as his mother did.

The only problem is that the other dimension is not like our own. Three ‘races’ of humans exist there, Littles, about our own height and four feet to six feet on average, ‘Tweeners’ who are between six feet and about eight-and-a-half feet tall, and ‘Bigs’ who average a towering ten to twelve feet high on average! Since Littles appear to be the size of Bigs' babies and toddlers, they have a compulsive instinct to baby them – literally! Though Connor is at least Tweener size in his home dimension, he knows there is a risk he could shrink to Little height as his mother did.

Beth Sylvester is a Tweener herself and another child of influential parents in the other dimension. Her wealthy Big mom is the daughter of a disgraced former CEO, and her dad is the first and only Tweener to serve on the Supreme Court. Connor’s mom and Beth’s dad were good friends while she was in the dimension, and they’ll quickly discover that they enjoy hanging out with each other.
