The actual subject of their ire made her way out the service door to the alley behind the boutique.... curiously invigorated by the rush of once again outwitting a pack of bullies... and dashed off as fast as her freakishly long legs would carry her, clad in only her under-burka running gear and trainers.... with absolutely NO idea where she was or where she was headed.

"Are you still serious about breaking out?" Brad whispered.

I nodded with a smile.

His grin grew wider. "I think I have a plan."

Filas woke with a start. It only took her a few seconds to realize why she woke up in the middle of the night. The neighbours’ party apparently had gained some more fun, so they had turned up the music. There was no way she could fall asleep again with that noise, considering there also seemed to be some people on their balcony, talking very loudly. She might just open the window and tell them to be quieter, but she was feeling way too dysphoric and socially anxious for that. She yawned. What could she do until the music was turned down again?

This is sequel to An Achean Tale and will make more sense if you read that first. I had no plans to write a sequel but the idea of the unknown tomboy's reaction to the amazons just wouldn't go away. There will not be any more of these. It was too hard to keep this light in a war. I basically just glossed over truths about casualties and the fate of female captives. I read a bowlderized version of the Illiad almost sixty years ago. Since then it has always been a part of the accepted cultural background of my life without ever reading a decent translation. That may have to change.

“Sophie…” The brown-haired woman heard a distant voice coo, waking her from her slumber. “Sophie… Wake up, birthday girl!”

“Umf,” Sophie moaned as a pair of soft hands gently shook her awake. “My birthday’s not ‘will Wednesday, for god’s sake…”

Lenny was politely enduring yet another phone call of manly advice from well meaning Uncle Dave about his appearance.

“Lenny, people are gossiping and the family is getting very concerned. You need to butch it up a bit and get a haircut. You've got your mother in a whirl. She's not sure if you're a boy or a girl. When we were fishing last week the bait store owner said “that dude looks like a lady”… and he was referring to you!"

Chapter Ten: What A Pain

Notes: Sorry for the late update. Lots of things have been colluding against me. Summer heat, dangerous smoke in the air from the forest fires, pitiful amount of inspiration for this story, and the fact I've been working on some original fiction I hope to get published someday. But here we are!

When we arrived at my B&B, Charles was delighted to see us. He truly was an avid people person and quickly got Tina and her mom into a rapt conversation.

“Enough about my world travels. I'm bored listening to my same old stories. I want to know about you. How did you and Christina's dad meet?” Charles inquired with a smile. As Maria gathered her thoughts to answer, it was clear from her expression that even Tina didn't know this tale.
