The call comes from Marcus at seven-thirty on Saturday morning.

I'm already awake — I've been awake since five, the mesh's activity elevated since the failed protocol, a low-level hum in the background of everything that is different from the ambient warmth of before. More insistent. Less ambient. ARIA pressing on the edges of things, or testing them. I've been lying in the dark noticing it and finding my own words when it tries to give me some.

Garnet Smith was an experienced Marine when he was transferred to 48 Commando. His statuesque figure and shock of red hair made him quite obvious in any military parade, so his hair was kept short and hidden under his green marine beret. Otherwise he had performed well when deployed around Britain’s shores. He had picked up a Scottish accent from living in Faslane, and was comfortable protecting nuclear facilities as part of 43 Commando.

Torn from his own world and stuffed into the body of a villainess, facing the end of a doomed route he himself wrote, "Amelia" must navigate a world she really should know - too bad she was never great at worldbuilding.

Stuck in a world she (maybe) created, Amelia quickly finds that reality has filled in the details she failed to describe. The characters who were so flat when she wrote them now have nuance, and motives. The kingdom she wrote into existence is experiencing internal strife she never even thought about. And let's not even get into the complexities of the magic system, or the demon that forced her into this situation to begin with...

Oh, and then there's the fact that she's about to be arrested and executed... but surely she can come up with a way to write herself out of that, right?

...Right?

Chapter 23 - Sortilège

Not long after the above exchange Connie and I retired to our beds. It was too late by then for me to telephone Guy as arranged. There was no telephone in the room, and I was too tired for a trip down to the lobby. In the meantime, I tried to take some satisfaction from the hope that he might be worrying about me!

Authors Note: Ive spent four chapters trying to build a world and I know in that time I've lost many of you. I think the world is built now, the board is set. This is the best chapter so far.

Just to a quick synopsis: It's 1994, ASHTON is a 20 year old college student in a small town. His best friend, GARRETT is a geek who is interested in esoteric knowledge and magic. At a party they met MARIE, 24 and JESS, 20. MARIE was looking for people she might recruit to her circle.

Chapter 3

After we had stored our things and had a quick look around outside, we went over to the bigger farmhouse to help get the lunch. Apart from the three of us, there were only three others there, with Magnus, the Unit Leader, telling us that the others were all in the field.

He introduced Nora and Petra, the communications expert and the ‘dresser’. The first thing that surprised us was that when he introduced us, he gave us different names. I was Alex, Matilda was Mary, and Hortense was now Hope.

I thought I looked pretty good, for a football player wearing a dress.

Chapter 21 – Small world

Two hours had yet to pass before the club was due to open and I was left to occupy the intervening time as I thought fit. My first need was to find myself some accommodation close by. No provision had been made by my new employers in that regard, and my new job would entail working into the small hours. The alternative of driving all the way home each night would be entirely impractical.

Samantha was supposed to disappear after graduation. Instead, Samuel opens the suitcase again and faces his first day maintaining her entirely on his own.

CHAPTER 10
Amina was pensive in bed that night.

“I can just about remember, my love. Being that young---well, younger. Being confused. Not exactly the done thing in our family, comfortable shoes. Must be so much harder when you’re in her situation. I think it’s actually harder for boys, and that’s what her family are still seeing”

I settled myself closer to her.

“Aye, but once you see her. It’s like that Maria was saying: she’s THERE, Three-D, full colour”

“Yes, but the old saying, none so blind? Seen so many girls, and boys, end up losing their family just because they fancy someone a bit, well, more like them”
