In the first three parts, Barb capitalizes on her son Kyle’s desire for a moped (a motor scooter) to propose a deal: If he wears girls’ clothes for a month, then he can get one. He makes the deal on the understanding that he can choose the clothes. He figures he will be able to find a masculine look, just as long as he wears sweatshirts bulky enough to hide the bras his mother adds to the deal. Kyle sees an easy win; his mother hopes that somehow the knowledge that he is wearing girls’ clothes will tame her boy.

Trisha pulled her nightgown off over her head and tossed it onto the bed before quickly stepping into her drawers. Church services began in about 90 minutes, and she wanted to get there early, to bask in the praise for the dance the night before. As she reached for her camisole, she looked over to see how Kaitlin was doing.

"Trisha," Kaitlin said loudly, pointing, "what the devil is that on your chest?"

Thirty days goes really fast when you're having fun. I guess with school and everything, these four weeks just flew by. Tomorrow we had to be in court again for mother's sentencing. We don't have to be there, but I want to be, because, well, she is my mother. Maybe she can get help where she is going, if she wants it. But mother went to the state hospital to have a psychiatric evaluation. I wonder what the doctor is going to say. Well, we will find out tomorrow.
