Their next meeting wasn’t at the studio. It was a small wine bar in the West Village with candles guttering in old glass bottles and a chalkboard menu that changed with the weather. Ava arrived first and texted a photo of the corner table; Aria stared at the image, at the two empty glasses catching candlelight, and felt the quiet throb of possibility.

Arjun booked a Tuesday evening under the name “A. Patel.” It took him half an hour to press confirm and three seconds to pray he hadn’t made a terrible mistake.

We spent the next three hours settled comfortably on the grass as the skies lit up with stars and shearwaters curdled the air with their conversations, only slowly dying away. It was well past midnight by the time we settled LC into her bunk, after a headtorch-guided amble back to the farmhouse, trying not to step on the rabbits.

The dinner I cooked that evening was spag bol, it's easy and apart from being messy to eat, everybody loves it. I'd got some Parmesan cheese, already grated, so all you had to do was sprinkle it over the bolognaise sauce. I don't bother trying to twiddle the pasta around my fork I just cut it up small and eat it normally with a knife and fork - works for me.

They did a loop around to take the road over the bridge, and then another loop on the other side to arrive at the entrance to Luna Park. The Lily Ponds lifted my mood in their shaded tranquillity, despite a sort of one-person argument between my wife and herself over whether a rather out-of-place black swan could count as a UK tick on that list she denied keeping.
