Chapter 16 October 9th, 2025

Whit was shaving every morning, something he’d never done in his life. Wednesday after work he did something he’d been thinking of doing for years. He stopped at the Salvation Army store to shop for women’s clothes. The place was dead but he still was constantly looking over his shoulder. He found a top that was new with tags. “I think I can get away with wearing this,” he said as he took it out of the bag to show Lucy. It was a soft knit long sleeve sweater in deep red with a wider neck then a men’s sweater would have.

It was a Sunday night - October 31, 2010 when my life changed, or maybe it began then. I had been married for less than a year to Romana, the woman I had always thought of as my best friend. We were ready to start talking about having children. I had always wanted to have children – it was a strong drive in me that I never really understood. I know now that there was a lot about myself that I did not understand, but that was going to change too.

I was a happy lad, living in a historic village in country England. My home was one of the thirty-six, almost identical, thatched houses along The Street, Milton Abbess, in Dorset. I was the third son of well-to-do parents.

The next morning, our space suits arrived. All eleven of us were all together when we were trying on the suits. Our group of eight simply tried on the suits, without catheters, and made sure they fit. They were set aside for our return to Earth. The other group got fully ready for flight, with a near pass of their target to the station just an hour from when the suits arrived.

Chapter Three

Taking off the frilly dress was a relief, though Sam was just as hesitant as before to step out of the bathroom once he was back in his regular clothes. As soon as he did, he was going to have to deal with more ‘Samantha’ references. Everything downstairs had spun out so quickly. Somehow, despite his gender, he was going to be the flower girl at Fiona’s wedding.

Chapter Two – When Time Breathed Again

At first, there was only silence—a silence older than memory, vast and sacred, as if the breath of the gods had been drawn in and the world itself awaited their command.

The village control room was manned from the fifth, with our cars sporting the new stickers. We each had a list. There were some of the old and some new names on them. We were to prepare and start the rounds on the sixth.

John Proudfoot’s plan to use some former servicemen to observe the comings and goings at Fox’s home for almost a month had paid off in ways he never expected. Not only did the team record the habits of Fox and his son Marcus, but they also photographed the people ‘Fox & Son’ entertained at the weekends.

Maya sat on the edge of her bed in the quiet of her bedroom. The only light in the room came from the soft glow of a small lamp on the bedside table, its warm yellow circle dancing gently across the walls. Her legs were bare in comfy blue shorts, and her pink top felt too bright against the dimness around her. She held the football jersey delicately in her hands, her fingers tracing the embroidered letters of MASON across the back.

We should be grateful and remember you in our thoughts tonight before we fell asleep if you would help us.” Arathane truly believed he had seen the worst that outsiders were prepared to subject their children to, yet as he turned to face the voice the sight of the three barefoot little girls dressed in little more than rags took him aback to a place he hadn’t ever in his darkest moments believed could exist. None of the emaciated girls, barely more than toddlers, looked older than three.
