When I made it down to breakfast, the mood was positive. I had passed the first hurdle or six and was still on track. When I arrived at the station, I organised my afternoon and evening shows, with two piles of notes. I had another meeting with the boss, a short one, and had a chat with Anita, who had come in to sort out her afternoon spot.

Sophia and Mariposa snuggled down together under the mosquito netting. They didn’t need any other covering in the warm weather that was normal on the island. Last night’s rain had made the lushness of their island home just that bit more lush, and the perfume of the flowers was intoxicating.

Chapter 17, October 10th, 2025

Lucy stood in Grace’s gravel driveway in front of the beat up pickup. The three tall pines behind the trailer trees loomed dark against the fading greens of the hills in the distance.

The door of the trailer opened up and Grace pushed her way through the heavy blanket hanging in the doorway. She was wearing cotton shorts and a long Hello Kitty sleep shirt. Her hair was in pigtails. She looked like a kid who’d just gotten out of bed even though it was 2:30 PM.

CAUTION: This story is based on a COVID conspiracy theory. I do not personally believe in any such theories, but I’m sharing it anyway. The story was written in the early months of the COVID-19 quarantine, and this was the kind of dream I had some nights during that time.

We didn’t realize what the virus was really doing until it was too late.

Bill's hand was working its way up my skirt under the table and was tugging the strap on my suspender belt. He loved me in stockings, which was why I wore them tonight.

The feed had begun as a tourist’s shaky livestream from Greece; within minutes, it was mirrored on every major network, rebroadcast by anchors who could barely keep their voices steady, some whispering as if afraid to disturb the sacred.

As the crisp mountain air stirred snowflakes outside, serenity settled over the cozy cabin. Peaceful silence wrapped the space, disturbed only when a soft knock gently broke the stillness.
