CHAPTER 28
We moved up the coast bit by bit, starting at the spot where the mountains ended. It was surreal: the Pyrenees simply came to an abrupt halt not just at the sea, but also at the edge of a vast plain, like a crease in a bedsheet. More importantly, though, we had sand rather than gravel.

We stopped in at the tourist office, where they had a list of hotels that Ange checked against her book, until she went “Ooh! That one there. Not the most expensive, but it’s got a bloody Michelin star!”

CHAPTER 11
I’d already met the neighbours, though. I was riding down to the surgery, not being driven, so it was a little difficult to stay in stealth. Anyway, I’d had more than enough of wearing binders. It was only drizzling on Tuesday morning, so I was in basic cycling tights, winter jacket and fleece hat rather than full-on waterproofs, which meant my shape was rather obvious. As I pulled down the garage door, I saw Thelma Moran dumping a rubbish sack into her wheely bin. No way out.

CHAPTER 27
I wasn’t that used ti flying, but by definition Ange was an old hand. There were, of course, no flights from Cardiff, so we had to take the train out to Bristol and fly from there, which spoilt my hopes of trying to spot my flat from the air. Anyway, it was raining.

What to say about the weekend? It was a weekend in Wales, in Spring, so it rained. Fortunately, there were women already on site who knew how to put up what they called a ‘Canadienne’ ridge tent. When I say that they knew, they still watched as we put our pair up in different but equally wrong ways, laughed, and only then showed us the right way., but thanks to them we actually stayed dry. At least inside our tents.

When they returned to the cottage, Faye said,
“Please bear with me. For almost all my life, I was not allowed to make even the smallest decisions. What I wore was chosen for me. I was never allowed to wear jeans or trainers. I had to wear a white shirt and tie even at weekends.

Part 10 Penny and the Black Swan

Tanya went off to work the scene with the rest of the girls and I went to find Sam. I explained to him what I wanted, and he said it would be easy enough. He went off to collect up his equipment while I went off to make-up to get a better face.

Even though I got in late I slept soundly and was up early for my morning jog followed by my stretching routine. All my preparation rituals fell into place and in no time, I was out the door. The lightness of last night hung with me as I jogged. It felt as though my feet never touched the ground. When I got back, I needed to pee so while sitting I re-examined my labia creation. After wiping I did a minor readjustment.

For the first few minutes, familiarity mixed with belief to make the room gentle and safe.
