The rest of the way to the mall, Sadie observed Chris’s process for his latest task. After seeing how it amused the others, as well as how fun it was to get Amy’s cousin to stumble through explanations of why he was saving each particular picture, she kept up the questions and comments. Despite the inappropriate nature of what they were talking about, Sadie somehow managed to keep up her innocent demeanor. It was a confusing contrast to Amy’s smug attitude and Julia’s more dominant energy.

Eventually, they arrived at Watsons Bay, and stopped outside Doyles on the Beach. At first, the friends thought it to be just a fish and chips café, but inside, when they met up with the show director, the Head of Entertainment, and Bluey, they found that it was much more than that.

Chapter Six: Out in the Open

Their next meeting wasn’t at the studio. It was a small wine bar in the West Village with candles guttering in old glass bottles and a chalkboard menu that changed with the weather. Ava arrived first and texted a photo of the corner table; Aria stared at the image, at the two empty glasses catching candlelight, and felt the quiet throb of possibility.

The website looked discreet but warm: Ava & Co. Transformations—NYC’s Premier MTF Makeover Studio. Tasteful before-and-afters. Testimonials that sounded like whispered confessions. A calendar widget with a few weekday openings and a handful of Saturday slots that vanished as he hovered over them, like they were frightened of his indecision.

Arjun booked a Tuesday evening under the name “A. Patel.” It took him half an hour to press confirm and three seconds to pray he hadn’t made a terrible mistake.

We spent the next three hours settled comfortably on the grass as the skies lit up with stars and shearwaters curdled the air with their conversations, only slowly dying away. It was well past midnight by the time we settled LC into her bunk, after a headtorch-guided amble back to the farmhouse, trying not to step on the rabbits.

The dinner I cooked that evening was spag bol, it's easy and apart from being messy to eat, everybody loves it. I'd got some Parmesan cheese, already grated, so all you had to do was sprinkle it over the bolognaise sauce. I don't bother trying to twiddle the pasta around my fork I just cut it up small and eat it normally with a knife and fork - works for me.

On the short trip to the Luna Park, Gina gave Samantha a medallion that she had in her bag, and they both carefully signed her copy of the Berlin show. They did a loop around to take the road over the bridge, and then another loop on the other side to arrive at the entrance to Luna Park. There must have been about fifty teenagers waiting for them and they cheered as the three got out of the car. Barry was there, with a grinning cameraman, and a sour-looking woman, made up as if she was a teenager.
