Dr. Elias Mercer’s office smelled like lavender and antiseptic, a combination that somehow made the framed diagrams of mammary glands on the wall feel less intimidating. The silver-haired endocrinologist leaned forward in his chair, steepling his fingers as he studied James and Jennifer with warm, crinkled eyes.

But the fact is that we grew up in the country on neighboring farms, and a bike pathe beside the road between them. We had a hand in making that path, and also our special track down to the Lohanokie River in front and other up into the Campbell Mountains behind. We loved the outdoors in those days. Hell, I still do.

The scent was strong, acrid, maybe even a little sweet but unmistakably chemical, it was difficult to pin down any of the separate notes of the scent.

“Keep your fingers straight.” she instructed.

“Uh, sorry…” is all I managed, having suddenly been pulled out of my amateur scent analysis of the nail polish fumes.

“I know you've done this before, surely you know to keep your fingers straight, is something bothering you Jacob?” Laura enquired.

James sat cross-legged on the living room floor, surrounded by open tabs on his laptop and a half-eaten granola bar that had somehow become part of his "research process." The screen glared back at him with a mix of medical jargon and forum posts from men who had actually tried induced lactation.

“Possible side effects: breast tenderness, hormonal imbalances, mood swings...”

He scratched his stubble. Okay, so he’d be emotional and a little sore. Big deal. He had survived that one time he had tried hot yoga. This couldn’t be worse.

After the announcements, the four of them sat at a table with marker pens. At their right was the store manager to ensure that all products being signed had a correct sales receipt. The line moved slowly, with them learning to answer the questions with enough information but not so much as to slow down the line. They sat and signed and talked until lunch, when the manager asked that the guests be given some time to get refreshments.

Our burst of laughter was interrupted by a call of “Budge over!” from Pen, as she and Keith appeared, each carrying a folded camping stool.

“Just ordered. Please tell me we’re not planning on hitting the chippy afterwards!”

I noticed a sharp look from Frank towards his wife, but she simply slipped an arm through his for a squeeze. Their business. That was when LC announced that she liked crunchy sausages, which drew Deb’s attention back to the rest of us.

The Goddess, the Girl, and the Velvet Noose

Synopsis

Lisa, Mayda and I met up in the Birdcage the following morning. With all guests now off the SuperYacht, Danny, Clive and the Skipper had helped themselves to the guest staterooms. Only a skeleton domestic staff remained on board; the rest, including the Purser had been sent on ahead on a domestic flight. They would be sent on leave for a few weeks until the boat recommenced sailing with guests in the Gulf and beyond. We had a leisurely breakfast; our charges, unlike normal guests, had busy workdays, so we, in contrast, would have plenty leisure time.

It was another superb day, LC managing Equinox, at VS, but I drew the line at Solstice, as it is not just HVS but involves a particularly nasty and sustained layback. We’d started on the relatively easy slab of Jagged Face, which is a balance and small holds affair, going as low as Hard Very difficult or Mild severe, before the far more technical (and vertical) Solstice face.
