We stayed in the car while Maz did her bird-naming extravaganza, listening to a new disc Ish had found in Bangor, before heading off to South Stack for more of the same, with the addition of LC’s insistence on counting every step from the top to the bridge over to the lighthouse, and Clara came to the fore just then, explaining what exactly a lighthouse was, as well as its purpose, while I filled the gaps by pointing out seals as well as some of the more famous climbs up the churned semi-rock of Mousetrap Zawn.

“What exactly is that…stuff, Dad?”

This story is set in a real place, a real time and is based around a real incident. I have used generic terms such as Militia and Infiltrators as I don’t want readers to be distracted by the politics. Anyone who is familiar with the area will be easily able to identify these groups and even the location of my platoon base. But none of this is important: The story is about the people.

I was a senior in high school when an underground gas leak led to a massive explosion in my neighborhood. The houses that weren’t immediately destroyed caught fire, and it was a while before they could put all the fire out. Everything for blocks was destroyed.

The houses were rebuilt, and I moved back into my family's house... alone.

I realized I didn’t want this. It wasn’t my house, my neighborhood, or my neighbors. They were all a bunch of imitations. The unique houses on my street had been replaced with a bunch of cookie-cutter copies sized like the originals, but not really like them otherwise. I was living in an imitation of the house I grew up in, without any of what made it special. I was alone, next to nobody I knew. The neighbors were strangers who bought the other rebuilt houses from the heirs of my former neighbors. It felt completely artificial, and I wanted to get away.

There were only three boys in the locker room at the ballet studio. We used to be best friends all through middle school. Then we started to drift apart in high school. I know why I pulled back, and I regretted it, but I had no idea why my best friends had not only drifted away from me but also from each other. We had been such a close-knit group. Standing together against the world. Three “girly” boys.

Chapter 35: New Year's Blessing

The momentous night of New Year’s Eve had finally dawned, and Yuqi’s heart danced with a blend of exhilaration and nervous anticipation. She had decided to don her magnificent royal robes, the fabric shimmering with rich hues that captured the light, and atop her head rested a delicately crafted crown, glinting like stars scattered across a midnight sky. With gentle persuasion, she had also convinced Sapphire to adorn her head with her own crown—a resplendent symbol of their unity and Sapphire's newly embraced role as her Queen.

Joanna, a trans woman returns to her hometown for the funeral of her murdered parents, facing rejection and prejudice. Rather than letting the bigots drive her away she decides to stay and find a role for herself.

I was sad that nice old Mrs Wilson next door passed away. She always had had a soft spot for me. The sadness was mitigated when I heard that a family with kids would move in instead. The Gadin family came from Sweden. That wasn’t what excited me. It was the kids.

As soon as I said that I realized how stupid I was. For one thing you don’t say that if you are the only boy in a locker room filled with cheerleaders. And that was not even the most stupid part of it.

We ate breakfast as a family plus one (plus bear), and I noticed little nudges by Clara to Ish, with the occasional meaningful look towards Maz or myself. I waited until we had done the dishes and cleared everything away before dropping the hint.

“You want a word with me, son?”

He looked down at his feet for a few seconds, then nodded, so I led him outside into the slowly warming day.

“What is it, Ish?”

“Um, Clara, Dad. She says… Look, her staying with us was my idea, and it’s really nice, and… but she thinks you might see her as pushy, and she doesn’t want that. She wanted me to let you know that if it’s awkward, she can always go back with the others”
