“Sir,” I said, trying to stay calm and respectful, “could you please ask Ms. Turner not to refer to me with female pronouns?”

“Well,” he said, “we have to use some pronoun or other. Perhaps one of the English teachers can recommend a good gender-neutral pronoun.”

The answer to “will they, won’t they?” is emphatically “They will!” The days pass by and the preparations… and the excitement… grow and grow!

"When I grow up, I'm going to be your bride," the seven year old girl said to the older boy.

The boy smiled, "Then I will give you the best life you can possibly wish for, or I am not worthy of marrying you."

"Really?" the girl giggled, "You promise?"

The boy raised his right hand, with the other placed close to his heart, "I swear on my father's memory, I will regain my family's fortune and you will never want for another husband. But how about you?"

"What about me?" the girl smiled innocently.

"Hehe, of course. I will wait for you forever," the girl then kissed the boy's temple, and with a wave, ran home for dinner.

That was the last time they met each other. Two days later, the boy and his mother left the vineyards. For the harvest season is over, and there was not much work left for casual labourers to make ends meet.

Amanda spent the ride home dividing her time between looking at her human face in the mirror attached to the passenger-side sun visor, and sticking her hand out the window, and giggling at how the wind would blow it this way and that.

Darcy smiled as she looked briefly over at Amanda, “That’s not safe sweetie put your arm in the car.”

Amanda quickly pulled her hand back in, just in time as a mailbox that someone had put too close to the road whizzed by. “Meep!” she half-squealed, half-chittered, guarding her hand. “Scary,” she whispered, looking up at Darcy.

Chapter 16

Alec

I had to get used to wearing the women's clothes. I also discovered make-up on a vanity in my new room which was redecorated along feminine lines.

Life in Dekarran for Garia initially consists, as might be expected, of demonstrations, councils and conferences. She begins to adapt to the routine of daily life in the castle. One new experience is to take in the view from the top of the King's Tower... During this event a simple touch causes her to question what it is to be a woman.
