Not something I expected in New York……

Blog About:

But it shouldn’t surprise me. Queensbury, NY is a community some 30 miles north of where I live. It is a community which is fairly agrarian, but also has a fair amount of old paper mills. It has become somewhat more cosmopolitan over the past decade as people move north from New York’s Capital/Saratoga Region where I live, but it is still a pretty red part of New York State.

Can We learn from history?

Can We (as in the human society) learn from history? Are We able — or willing — see how current events are eerily similar to events that happened over 250-260 years ago? Can We see the parallels of what happens in the present with what happened in the past, and crucially how the outcome of the past parallel could be a pretty good predictor for our own short term future?

My newest reason for sticking around a while longer…….

Like many of us who suffer from gender dysphoria, I have had more than my fair share of suicidal thoughts over the years. Hell, I spent a good deal of my time in service to my country inadvertently placing myself in harm’s way, subconsciously seeking my own death.

Fighting hate……..

After cleaning up the kitchen from dinner this evening, I sat down to read while my spouse watched the end of the Philadelphia/Buffalo football game. My oldest son and his wife were at the game; my son is a Philly fan while his wife is a Buffalo fan, so both of them were excited to be at the game - especially in light of the fact that it was the last regular season game at the Buffalo stadium as they move into their new stadium before the start of the next season. Buffalo is a five hour drive from our home, so they are spending the night and coming home tomorrow.

Feeling crunchey

Blog About:

Author:

That's a phrase borrowed from the 70s. Feeling crunchy mean you are or should be embarrassed. There's a checker at my local Safeway whose quite efficient and personable. When I first went through their check stand with my groceries, I thought they were male Goth. Dark clothes, heavy eye makeup and dark nail polish. I've know a few Goth and I thought it strange because the personality was more outgoing and upbeat than any other Goth I'd known.

Merry Christmas to all…….

I hope that everyone here has a wonderful day, and please remember that even in the worst of times there are people who care about you here. Even when life seems to be too much to bear, all you have to do is reach out a hand and ask for help.

Chris Rea RIP

Sorry to be self indulgent, but just a quick memorial to my favourite guitarist, who sadly passed away today.
Chris Rea was born in Middleborough, now called Teeside, but at the time, Noth Riding of Yorkshire.
His beautiful guitar playing and gravelly voice were the soundtrack of my adolescence, from the poppy "Fool if you think it's over" to the sublime "Auberge", and, of course, he also wrote the classic "Driving Home for Christmas".
I've seen him play at least ten times, and on every occasion, he came over as a nice guy.
Lucy xx

As many, if not most, Gaby Bond fans know, the Ahr valley was devastated by a flash flood in July 2021. Especially upstream from Dernau, via Rech, Mayshoß, Altenahr to Ahrbrück and beyond, the train tracks were completely destroyed and washed away.

Interactive Table of Contents question

My latest offering features an interactive Table of Contents. The body of the story is preceded by a column of jump-links that allows the reader to jump to a particular chapter. I've pretty much decided that on longer works (in my mind that means >20K words) that rather than posting as a serial I'll provide this kind of means for the reader to read part of the story, leave and come back later and be able to jump to where they left off.

New story up

A Small Protest cover.png

I wrote this story some time ago. Until now it was only available as an eBook from online retailers.

It was inspired by a very real protest in 2017. It was chronicled by instinctmagazine.com in their story titled: “Boys in Skirts Beat the Heat—and the System” and featured this photo.

I have been giving much thought to all that I have……..

To be thankful for this year - and to all that I have lost. To all that WE have lost.

I have much to be thankful for. I am coming up on five years cancer free this spring, and I feel great. I am healthy, very comfortable financially, and I am finally able to relax and enjoy life without feeling driven to climb the next rung on the career ladder. Something that those who have served will understand, one is shooting at me, and just as importantly I am not having to shoot at anyone to protect my team.
