Heart of a Lion
A Short Story of Reimagined History

Who was he, my master and Lord of my Heart? Richard the first of his name King of England, Duke of Normandy, and of Aquitaine, and of Gascony, Lord of Cyprus. Count of Poitiers, and of Anjou and Maine and Nantes, Overlord of Brittany, Richard Coeur de Lion – the Lionheart.

MADDY
“Riiiiiight… Now, we both prefer monochrome, but you mentioned colour. Shall we get the pudding served, so we can clear the table to look at your portfolio?”

He hoovered up the ice cream I offered, so it wasn’t long before the table was cleared, dishes left soaking for the moment. That was what I normally did, but he didn’t need to know any of that. His portfolio was a large folder of paper prints, and one set caught my eye, as while it looked monochrome, there was a tiny dot of colour down near the bottom edge. I stood on the brake several times, but we got there, and in summary, the bite-sized chunks made perfect sense. I could feel the commas and full stops reasserting themselves in his speech.

Recently I blew the dust from this very early story and was happy to get reacquainted with the Mendoza family. Please note: I do not speak Spanish, but was helped by a friend from Málaga, Spain, who lived for a time in Buenos Aires. Any errors in translation or idioms were probably typos on my part and not necessarily her fault!

MADDY
I was riding to the supermarket, ready for my version of a Big Shop, which is easy enough to fit onto even a small bike when you live solo, and it was a miserable day, joy to the world. I was musing on whether it was time to get some better footwear for the bike, or at least some waterproof over trousers that were actually proof against water, when the handlebars started to twist in my hand as the rest of the bike shimmied frantically from side to side. My hand let the throttle close, and thank god I didn’t grab the front brake, but as the engine slowed I coasted to a very wobbly stop, where I sat astride the little machine trying not to hyperventilate. What the hell?

Chapter 15: A Game Interrupted

The living room was alive with the sounds of rapid button clicks and the muffled cheers and groans of Yuqi and her friends. They were locked in an intense gaming session, their characters navigating a chaotic level that none of them seemed close to beating.

“Stay behind me!” Ian shouted, frantically dodging an enemy attack.

“I’ve got it covered!” Yuqi replied, her fingers moving quickly over the controller.

Elliot groaned as his character met a sudden, untimely end. “Unbelievable. This game is rigged.”

The room erupted in audible gasps and loud murmurs following my mother's declaration.

I was stunned. How could I not be? My mother had just admitted to witchcraft.

Unlike my brother, I spent all my days with her. I was always with her except those times she left home to help bring babies into this world and care for ailing mothers. I was the one person that knew she wasn't guilty of such a thing.

Chapter Eight: Time for Work
Sunday, September 12, 2004

I woke Sunday morning, got up, made the bed, showered, shaved, and put on panties and a bra. After applying makeup, I chose an elbow-sleeve A-line dress in white with blue panels and shoulders with white sandals. Then my wig and finished with small hoop earrings. I packed everything, and put my suitcases by the bedroom door.

Taking my computer to the kitchen, I said, "Good morning, Roger. How are you today?"

After flubbing a powerful incantation, meant to give newly coronated Demon Queens the wisdom of their ancestors, Devilla Satanne awakens to memories of her past life as Jacob Divington, a human from Earth. Having gained a new perspective on life, she quickly comes to a rather horrifying conclusion: she's been a complete and utter brat! No wonder everyone hates her!

And then there's the fact that she's apparently been reincarnated as the villainess of Tower Conquest, a lesbian porn game with a surprisingly intricate plot. One in which the Heroine conquers Dimona Tower, turning Devilla's people against her in the process. In victory, the Heroine brings about a glorious age of peace between demons and humans for the first time in millennia. ...Which actually sounds pretty good for her people, come to think of it. Devilla knows her terrible behavior is beyond forgiveness, but maybe she can still make up for her past mistakes? She just needs to make sure the events of the game unfold correctly. Though there is one little detail she'd like to change - the part where Devilla herself is killed or enslaved!
