My name was Yusuf. I had just celebrated my eighteenth birthday. Life for me as a Muslim young man was complicated by the fact that I felt like a girl inside. Islam worldwide did not look kindly on those who wanted to change their gender. I lived in the Muslim quarter of the old city of Jerusalem. There was an old place in the quarter that was called the pool of Bethesda. It was discovered in the late 1800s and had been an archaeological dig ever since.

Trish was taken by surprise by Dido wanting to kiss her. She slowly responded, but broke off the kiss before it got out of hand.

“Sorry, Trish,” said Dido.

“Janet! Janet! Wake up!” I kick my mattress with the back of my feet to get the attention of my sister down below. My twin groaned. “What time is it?”

I go down the ladder of our bunkbed as she says this, then sit on the edge of her mattress. “It’s 5 AM.”

My sister throws her pillow at me. “C’mon, Jasmine. It’s too early. Let me sleep.”
